Kennesaw State University and Southern Poly will merge in 2015

Kennesaw State University and Southern Polytechnic State University will be consolidated into one campus over the next two years, under a plan proposed Friday by University System of Georgia Chancellor Hank Huckaby.

The surprise announcement came less than a year after the state Board of Regents created four new institutions by merging eight existing ones. Those mergers at the time were considered a “milestone” in the university system’s history as it shrunk to 31 colleges, down from 35.

Huckaby first suggested mergers in September 2011, just a few months after he took over the system. It is part of a large-scale plan to force the system to confront today’s economic realities — it has lost more than $1 billion in state funding since the recession started.
